Dedicating the Merit

This is a profound and important part of practicing in the Mahayana tradition, because it brings to life the idea of devoting all of one’s actions to the benefit of all beings. At the conclusion of practicing, the practitioner may dedicate the merit using one of the following forms. Each section includes an audio recording of the dedication.

Traditional Buddhist

By this merit, may all obtain omniscience
May it defeat the enemy, wrongdoing
From the stormy waves of birth, old age, sickness and death, from the ocean of samsara
May I free all beings

Shambhala

By the confidence of the golden sun of the great east
May the lotus garden of the Rigdens’ wisdom bloom
May the dark ignorance of sentient beings be dispelled
May all beings enjoy profound, brilliant glory

Entering the Way of the Bodhisattva

For as long as space endures
For as long as living beings remain
Until then may I too abide
To dispel the misery of the world
