24. Of the two witnesses, hold the principal one.

The “two witnesses” are my view of myself and others’ view of me. The “principal one” is my view of myself. This slogan reminds me that I’m the only one who really knows myself, whether it’s the shiny parts that I like and want to show off to the world or the unpleasant parts I would rather hide as deeply as possible.

While this slogan tells me to pay more attention to my own perceptions, I believe it is also important to openly receive feedback from others. This helps me see my blind spots and work with letting go of ego-clinging. Receiving feedback brings me into direct contact with my attachments about how other people see me – and how I see myself! I may not enjoy the mirror someone else holds up that reflects the patterns I can’t see.

My habitual pattern in receiving feedback may be to take it personally, as if the opinion of the other person is true and truly about me. This can give life to my own beliefs and stories about myself, which may not be very life-serving. Feedback also provides an opportunity to learn what is precious to the person giving it to me. Ultimately, whatever anyone else says is about them, not about me. Learning to trust this helps me understand and cherish others, as well as myself.
